Operation Cheddar Valley / Club Night
On 30 September 2009 a few of us cycled to a new club night at The Wheatsheaf pub in Shedfield from Ed’s house in Locks Heath. The 7 mile leisurely cycle was fun in the chilly dark evening and the woods were creepy with the owls twit toowooing in the moon light.
We got to the club night and met other club members who travelled their by car in the pub. Some members did not realise the car park was on the opposite side to the pub but were soon put right by the landlord Tim!
Everyone were chatting happily and having a laugh. The atmosphere was fun and jovial. There was a good turn out with 10 members attending. Everyone loved the real ale and cider. The pub did home made food specialising in curries up until 9pm for a round £7.50 but no one took this up but may well do so next time!
Ed, the PIVC ALO, got out the bulletins from other IVC’s and these were viewed by members. As a Portsmouth IVC member makes you eligible to go to other neighbouring Clubs events.
A new lady prospective member from Manchester originally and new working in Portsmouth joined up and was very socialable and very keen on improving her cycling! The regular Old Rosie Bike Ride was mentioned which was next due on Friday 9 October. She saw PIVC as a good place to meet new friends and expand her social life.
At 10.30pm everyone started to go home and the cyclists made their way back to Locks Heath in the dark and mist.

Pitch and Putt
The Golfing Gods were benevolent last week as Norman and Paul went round in their best scores ever! What’s the betting that next time it all goes to pot?
Skiing holiday in the new year?
I’ve mentioned to a few people that I’m planning on going to Austria skiing in the New Year. My original intention was to go to Soll for a week on the 30th Jan with Bath Travel. If a lot of people are interested in going though it might be better to book a chalet and maybe go at a different time.
So what do you think? Please use the contact form on the “about us” page or leave a comment here or see me at a club night.
Pub Night
A fair crowd at The Cormorant this week. The fast approaching Halloween party was discussed as was the Dinner/Dance for Christmas. Another year flying by.
Madness – Carisbrooke Castle
Madness were very good and they played at Carisbrooke Castle for 2 hours from 8.30pm until 10.30pm . We all got there at 6pm and watched the supporting bands. Jo, myself and friends who went from the Club enjoyed the outside venue and danced like loonies to all their famous hits like Baggy Trousers, Night Boat to Cairo. Some drizzle did not dampen the atmosphere and helped to cool us all down as we were so hot dancing!
It was an excellent idea to cycle there as to get there by car or shuttle bus would have been a nightmare due to the access roads being so small.
Getting into the venue was interesting as we discovered that the small print on the reverse of the ticket stated we could not take food or alcoholic drink into the site. So the plums and Cornish Pasties we had to leave outside in one of the panniers or see them thrown in a bin! What a waste!? The flask of coffee was allowable for some reason. We were lucky as managed to get some red in and then sneak in a pasty !!
Going home was a doddle and we cycled to our B&B; the lovely Wheatsheaf pub in the centre of Newport.
On Bank holiday Monday we cycled to Sandown along the flat disused railway track and layed on the beach and swam in the warm sea as was a scorcha!
A great couple of days!
Old Rosie is 24
Ed, Jo, Tim and Myself did our regular evening cycle ride from Locks Heath to Gosport and back the other day. We had a few diversions this time around: road works at Lee-on-the-Solent which we tried to cycle through, but found our way blocked, so had to double back and join the queue at the traffic lights. Then we found that Browndown Road closed, so another diversion required.
Anyway, we had a nice meal at the Wetherspoons, and a couple of nice youg ladies wanted their pictures taken with us – must wear my Beano cycling jersey more often!
We decided that as next month will be the 25th Operation Old Rosie cycle ride, we would theme it “Hereos and Villains”, so if you want to dress up for it, please do (we won’t mind if you don’t though).
If you just want to join us for drinks/meal at The Star or at The Osborne View, them we’d love to see you.

Barbecue in Farlington

BBQ
Anna organised a great barbecue in her back garden on the 1st August. We were fortunate with the weather (not easy with our summer weather) and everyone had a great time.
BBQ approaching fast
Don’t forget the BBQ on the 25th July.
Update 22nd July
The club will provide plates, cutlery, salad, rolls, sauces etc. Please bring your own food to cook on the BBQ.
We aim to have the grill ready for cooking at 6pm. Please buy your drinks at the pub bar. There will be a £5 charge on the night to cover the hire of the BBQ and the salad / bread etc. provided by the club.
Hope to see you there
